It’s funny how even though we all know to “expect the unexpected,” life consistently throws us “curve balls.” And though we are conscious of the fact that “change is inevitable,” how easily we can get blind-sided on a random afternoon with one of those “blips in the graph!”
This is exactly what happened to me when I found out I was pregnant. It wasn’t so much that I was shocked that the pee-stick showed a positive result, as my husband and I had discussed having a child for several months. It’s more that I really didn’t think about how pregnancy, and ultimately a baby, would impact my life!! Sounds so silly, I know. But I truly hadn’t given any thought specifically to what this life-changing experience would mean for my chiropractic practice, my patients, and my career.
Nothing invites clarity better than that little blue plus sign! So very quickly, I had to figure some stuff out. How long would I be able to continue practicing while pregnant? Did I want to take time off after having the baby? How long was reasonable, both for my patients and my baby? Who would care for my patients while I was caring for my baby? The questions reeled through my mind one after another, faster than I could even think about sharing this exciting news with my husband!
Ultimately, I realized that it was time to ask for help. While there seems to be a lot of chiropractors in the area, AWESOME chiropractors that practice upper cervical specific chiropractic, whom I would trust with my incredible patients, are NOT easy to find!! As such, I called on my amazing team here at The Specific Chiropractic Center for advice and assistance. They helped me define a plan, including the hiring of an awesome new associate, Dr. Naxielly Cordoba, and the mapping out of a training schedule that would ensure that Naxielly was appropriately trained so that I could take the much-needed time off to have and care for my baby.
As you know, I practice a VERY specific type of chiropractic (pun intended!) There may be 60,000 licensed chiropractors in the United States, but fewer than 1,000 of them practice upper cervical chiropractic, and even fewer practice our specific technique. So without the help of my team at The Specific, I would seriously have been LOST. Luckily for all of us, I am a part of this incredible team, and they absolutely stepped up to help me and our community here at the Oakland office.
I’m sure some of you didn’t even realize that I was part of a larger team – that there are several offices that make up the greater team of The Specific Chiropractic Center! Well it’s true. For the past 8 years, our team has expanded from 4 offices in California with 5 doctors to 9 offices with 12 doctors. Soon there will be 18 offices across the United States with 20 doctors!! We currently have offices in Oakland (duh), Dublin, Daly City, Elk Grove, Chico (those are the California offices), as well as Kauai, HI, Boulder, CO, Salt Lake City, UT and Atlanta, GA. Within the next year, offices will be opening in Oklahoma City, OK, Phoenix, AZ and 3 (yes 3!) in Dallas, TX.
So many people have said to me over the years, “I wish your office was in (xyz city) so that you could help my (mom/brother/friend/etc.!)” Well now we are that much closer to being able to help all of your family and friends! Do me a favor and check out our website to see all of the offices and doctors that make up The Specific.
Can you relate to my journey of going from business gal to mama, of needing to ask for help, and of relying on your team for something very important?? Then stay tuned for a whole series of blog posts about just that! If not, I’m sure it reminds you of someone in your life that can relate to it, so please forward the information on to them!
