If you have been active in social media at all over the past few years, you might recognize this latest trend, the illustrious dad bod. If you don’t know what I am talking about, this short definition will definitely help you get a clearer picture: a nice balance between working out and keeping a beer gut.

dadbod

Interestingly enough, this latest trend has been blamed upon multiple facets of life: diet, exercise or lack there of, sleep, stress, and of course alcohol. Yet, I would like to propose one major factor that is contributing to the epidemic that is taking place within our male population: nervous system interference, or as Led Zeppelin once put so eloquently: communication breakdown.

According to the National Institute of Health. “Almost 3 in 4 men (74 percent) are considered to be overweight or obese.” What’s the first thing that happens when a man hears this? He probably jumps on the latest trend diet and  checks out some form of fitness such as CrossFit (because who doesn’t want a 6 pack like those guys). Now, don’t misunderstand me – at the Specific Chiropractic Center – we LOVE empowering our communities to make smart choice about their health and well being, and in this case, those two steps towards changing their life will have a drastic impact on their overall health and reduction of said “dad-bod.”

Yet, one piece of the puzzle fails to be addressed, the nervous system. In most cases, men between the ages of 30 and 50 are the sole provider for their family. They spend countless hours a week grinding at their job to ensure that their spouse and children have a roof over their head and food on the table amidst other nice amenities. Believe me, I am in that very position myself as a husband and father of one child with one on the way, I understand these very stressors. When placed in that position, stress levels skyrocket. With increased chronic stress, our nervous system goes into freak out mode and stays in a red-alert type state constantly pumping out cortisol.

When placed under high stress all the time, the body is constantly exposed to cortisol (which was not designed to be a long term solution for stress management) due to the nervous system breakdown. This results in a drastic increase in insulin levels which has a side effect of causing your blood sugar to drop causing you – the stressed out provider, husband, father to have constant cravings for sugar and other feel good foods. Thus, the resulting dad bod.

Now, what if I told you that the solution to moving out of the dad bod phase actually lies in the ability of your nervous system to respond to stress. Makes sense, doesn’t it? Well, at The Specific Chiropractic Center, we are experts at managing the nervous system. Each and every day at our 19 offices across the United States, we are making a drastic impact in our communities to help debunk the myths of chronic health issues by providing conservative nervous system care. Knowing that almost 74% of men are considered overweight (“dad-bod”) and now knowing that it is a result of nervous system dysfunction, why wouldn’t you take the necessary steps to having an examination of your nervous system performed? It makes sense doesn’t it?

From Kauai, HI to Atlanta, GA, we at the Specific Chiropractic Center stand for empowering our communities to make smart choices relative to their health and well being, and that includes saying no to dad bod.
