A so-called fountain of youth has been the subject of folklore and rhetoric for hundreds of years. The ill-fated voyages of Ponce de Leon in the spring of 1513 are a testament to mankind’s search for an elusive spring of vitality, luring people to seek out the missing links, false idols, and hidden secrets to staying young and living longer.
Modern medicine and nutritional science have abetted this interest, in spite of simple truths that remain primary goals toward enriching our lives and maintaining good health for as long as possible. Finding our own fountains of youth, in reality, is as simple as following logic and common sense down realistic paths to success, through exercise, diet, and well-defined life plans that afford the most positive results.
Recent trends, including injections of Botox or human growth hormones (a substance produced naturally by our pituitary gland), have as many risks and potential hazards as long-lasting benefits. Supplementing nature with artificial stimulants goes against good medicine and common sense, just as cosmetic surgery aims to circumvent the effects of our body’s natural aging process, inviting dangerous complications.
The Power of Positive Thinking
Our misconception of wellness stems from our tendency to equate physical appearance with physical health. The media’s promotion of lithe, muscular bodies with beautifully toned skin, glowing white teeth and endless energy are falsehoods not based in reality. These individuals face the same aches, pains, heartaches, and physical limitations we do – they’re just well-kept secrets seldom revealed until the effects of their circumstances become impossible to avoid.
Our attitudes play a large part in our emotions, and emotions determine the signals we send to our body’s nervous system. In essence, looking younger begins with a quality mental picture, one that reduces our tendency to compare ourselves to others in order to determine how healthy we really are.
Much of our youthful power and vitality already exists, for we control the level of health and energy we acquire. Regardless of the benefits realized by vitamin supplements, fitness memberships, and exotic, natural foods, strategy and balance are important factors to better health, as humans shape daily routines to eliminate bad habits and promote good ones.
What is a Healthy Lifestyle?
A true fountain of youth is a program that utilizes key initiatives: reducing or eliminating our destructive habits, namely tobacco, alcohol, and undue stress; a healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and grains that supply essential vitamins and nutrients; a steady intake of fluids dominated by water and low-sugar fruit juices. Perhaps most importantly, is to fully consider and understand the role that the nervous system plays in the normal aging process.
Furthermore, staying young means staying active. A regimen that incorporates some form of cardiovascular exercise and schedules that allow for an adequate amount of rest is a giant step forward toward better health.
We are not Alone
It is also important to consider that the richest of lives allow room for other people. Our friends and family give us purpose and lift our spirits in times of need. Participating in communities, taking an interest in the lives of others, engaging friends and neighbors in conversation and collaboration – these are things that keep us “young at heart.”
