Jenne,

In answer to your question, YES! Carrot tops are edible and there is some definite nutritional value in them. They are commonly used in homemade carrot juice to balance out the flavor and you can you put them in the blender as part of a green smoothie. Some people also suggest putting them on top of their salads as a garnish. Fair warning, I would recommend only using the tops of organic carrots due to the usage of pesticides sprayed on the tops of others.

Dear Dr. Smith,

Your eating healthy article was very good to read! I also like your first suggestion about shopping around the perimeter of the store. The produce section of the grocery store is my favorite and sometimes I buy more than I can eat! Could you explain why buying quart size yogurt is better than the small size containers sometime?

Thank you for this information,

I agree that planting a garden is one of the best things you can do for healthy eating. If you have not already purchased your vegetable plants, Garden Harvest Supply is a good online source that offers vegetable plants for sale. http://www.gardenharvestsupply.com/category/buy-vegetable-plants-online

Your very first suggestion, #1, is a great suggestion, shopping around the perimiter of the store. That's were all the fresh food is. Avoiding canned and processed foods is important as they are full of salt and have very little nutritional value beyond calorie content. When shopping in the frozen food isle, select minimally processed foods; frozen vegetables and fruits. Have a sweet tooth? Who doesn't! Try sherberts made from fruit instead of dairy.
The best advice is always the simplest, simplicity makes it easier to make the changes that lead to a healthier life style.

Ooo, your list is making me feel good! I have a question on #2, what can you do with the carrot leaves and stalks? Are they edible?
