Kids and the Chiropractic Connection

Many people have questions and concerns regarding if and when their children should visit a chiropractor. Is it safe? Is it something kids really need?

I ask you to think back to a time when you, too, were a kid, completely carefree and happy. Remember those summers when you ran for hours on end, occasionally falling before picking yourself up and continuing on your merry way. Do you recall bumping down the road on your bike, scooter, skateboard or wagon? Relive those bumps, slips and bruises—seemingly insignificant injuries at the time.

We may be tough on our bodies as adults, but we also put them through a rough time as kids. So, to answer the questions parents have about upper cervical chiropractic care and children: Yes, it is safe, and yes, even kids should be visiting a UCC practitioner on a regular basis … and especially if a traumatic event occurs.

Upper cervical problems and instability often occur during the birth process but frequently go undiagnosed. In fact, research into spinal trauma suggests that at least twelve babies out of 100 have subluxations in the upper cervical spine at birth. These problems are often expressed as respiratory issues. As kids grow and proceed through life at their own (often reckless) pace, they will undoubtedly encounter a few physical pitfalls along the way. The minor falls and bumps from childhood can produce subluxations that have the potential to manifest as full-blown diseases as adults.

When the spine becomes misaligned in children, the resulting problems are not necessarily backaches. In fact, kids rarely go to chiropractors due to spinal pain. Rather, a whole host of conditions appear in children that may initially appear to have nothing to do with the back. These conditions include nursing problems, bed wetting, ear and eye problems, nervousness, allergies, frequent colds, fevers, hyperactivity and poor
concentration, among many others.

Those of us who are trained in upper cervical chiropractor care are versed in research on pediatrics and how their bodies grow and change. We’ve taken classes on how to perform chiropractic adjustments on children. There are virtually no risks involved with taking a child to see a chiropractor, and there have been no recorded incidents that chiropractic care has harmed a child, something those of us in the industry take pride in. During their appointments, kids undergo thorough and careful evaluations, which allow upper cervical chiropractors to identify, evaluate and treat problematic areas.

Just as you care for your body by seeking chiropractic care, you should seriously consider doing the same for your kids. Children have flexible spines, which means they usually restore to proper alignment and function faster than adults’ spines do. When uncorrected subluxations are left to fester, they often lead to further spinal degradation in later years. Help your kids avoid an ongoing, chronic health problem later in life by embracing the positive implications of upper cervical care when they’re young.
