How to Make Your Body Toxin-Free
Coming out of the holiday season high, you may suddenly realize that this year wasn’t just about catching up with old friends and decorating the house with garland and lights. There’s a good chance that packaged in with the merriment and joy were piles of cookies topped with frosting, sugar-packed candy, holiday-laced drinks and heavy meals laden with calories.
Now that the end-of-the-year holidays are over, it’s time to take stock of your body again. There are thousands of chemicals and additives in food products that are suspected to cause medical problems in the human body, and if you indulged in a workplace potluck, snacked on something at a holiday party or enjoyed an over-the-top-meal at a friend’s home, you might not know for sure what substances you introduced into your body. Sugar substitutes, certain food preservatives, hydrogenated oils and other substances can have devastating short- and long-term effects on your health, and they can sneak into foods without you even knowing.
If you’ve potentially ingested harmful toxins into your body over the holiday season, it’s time to give your system a reboot. There are several ways to cleanse your body of toxins, all of which can help you recharge, rejuvenate and renew your commitment toward living a healthy
lifestyle.
Detoxifying the body isn’t necessarily a lifelong commitment; one week or even one weekend focused on cleansing the body can make a significant difference. However, making subtle but permanent changes in your diet and lifestyle post-holidays is really the best way to jumpstart your detox.
To begin, cut out substances in your life that you know contain toxins. Alcohol, caffeine, refined sugar and saturated fat are among the top offenders. Eating lots of fiber (including brown rice and organically grown fresh fruits and vegetables) helps to detoxify the body. Vitamin C helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that dispels toxins, so ensure you’re receiving enough of this vital substance. In addition, drinking at least two quarts of water daily also cleanses the body.
Detoxification is not only about eating and drinking certain things. Now that those tough family and work-related gatherings are over, regain your sanity and reduce the stress. Yoga and meditation are two ways to help the body reboot after the holidays. Deep breathing allows oxygen to circulate thoroughly throughout the body, so take the time to focus on that every day. Visiting a sauna allows the body to release toxins through perspiration, and exercising for at least an hour every day is also a good solution.
