Using Chiropractic Care to Treat Dizziness and Vertigo

If we feel physically off balance or the world seems to move around us, we have a problem with dizziness. Dizziness causes some people to experience slight environmental movements while more extreme symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, hearing loss, visual problems, difficulty walking and ear pressure. Regardless of the severity of symptoms, the bottom line is that people can’t function well when they don’t feel upright and balanced.

There are essentially four types of “dizziness”: Feeling lightheaded, feeling faint, feeling off balance with a sense of disequilibrium and experiencing vertigo, a sensation that feels as though the world is spinning around us. While the inner ear frequently plays a role in such problems, cervical factors may be present in all types of dizziness. Disequilibrium and vertigo are most commonly controlled by chiropractic rehabilitation, but upper chiropractic care may be essential in helping to manage all four types of dizziness.

The spine plays an essential role in helping the body maintain a sense of equilibrium and balance. Several studies have determined that cervicogenic vertigo occurs when joints in the upper neck are irritated (another type of vertigo, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, is caused by problems in the inner ear). These joints are essential in coordinating eye, head and body movements as well as controlling posture and helping determine spatial orientation, so it’s little surprise that stress on these joints can result in vertigo. Though trauma-induced vertigo may take months or years to develop, upper cervical chiropractic care can help minimize the symptoms associated with this type of injury by reducing the irritation to the nerves that cause vertigo.

Upper cervical chiropractors use a handful of tests to determine if the dizziness or vertigo experienced by a patient is due to a cervical spine problem and/or an inner ear issue, the most common of which is the rotating stool test. If vertigo or disequilibrium is caused by an issue in the cervical spine, an upper cervical chiropractor can frequently treat the problem. The cervical spine must be fully functioning in order for patients to completely recover from cervicogenic vertigo. Treatment for this type of vertigo is directed toward the area of joint dysfunction as well as areas of muscular dysfunction.

For those suffering from disequilibrium, chiropractic care is often combined with propriosensory retraining—a system designed to retrain the locomotor system and sense of balance. A holistic healing approach that encompasses upper cervical chiropractic care is essential for a full recovery for both disequilibrium and cervicogenic vertigo.

Focus and Concentration

Focus and Concentration

When the telephone rings, the television plays at full volume, kids cry and someone knocks on the door, it can be next to impossible to give any one of these things our full attention. And it’s not just this scenario—we are frequently surrounded by stimuli that easily distract us from getting things done well or in a timely manner.

Concentration is the ability to focus specifically on a single task while ignoring all other stimuli. If we can manage these outside distractions and keep our wandering thoughts in check, we often find our work is easier to complete, is more readily remembered and takes less time. In addition, good concentration often results in fewer mistakes.

This all sounds good in theory, but many people struggle to focus and maintain concentration. The ability to focus is different for each person, so there is no standard equation of factors that can be aligned to best harness an environment for complete concentration. The good news, however, is that concentration is a skill, and because of this, it can be learned and developed with practice.

Understanding what stands in the way of concentration is the first step in learning how to improve it. Feeling tired, hungry, stressed out or lethargic can all affect concentration. If we feel bored, have too much on our minds, are purposely avoiding a task or fear we may fail at it, our concentration is also affected. Our environment also plays a part: An overabundance of sound, the temptation to do other things, poor lighting and interruptions by other people can also make it difficult to concentrate.

To evaluate our concentration on a particular task we need to ask a number of questions: How dedicated or committed are we to the present task? Are we interested in it? Do we have the skills and abilities to complete the task? What is our current emotional and physical state? Are we currently in an environment with minimal distractions? In answering these questions, we need to balance these factors so that they work in our favor, thus making it easier to focus with fewer distractions.

Next, we must consider how concentration works. There are essentially four components that define concentration: width, direction, intensity and duration. Width refers to how much information on which we are focused. A broad perspective involves processing a large amount of information while a narrow one limits that information. Within a particular task, we may need to shift back and forth between these two perspectives, which means we must maintain the demands of the activity while avoiding irrelevant thoughts during that shift. The direction of our focus can be either internal or external. Internal focus requires we disregard external events while external focus requires us to focus on stimuli around us, such as when we drive a car. The intensity of concentration determines how hard we need to focus on the task at hand. The duration refers to how long we need to sustain our concentration. Being mentally flexible allows us to shift between the different dimensions of concentration easily and quickly.

The final steps in improving our concentration are understanding the things that make focus and concentration difficult for us, managing internal factors that can deter our ability to concentrate and practicing focus-related activities, such as yoga and meditation. Thyroid Disorders

There are established benefits to upper cervical specific procedures in impacting illnesses and conditions resistant to other forms of care. Qualified doctors have identified thyroid disorders as one that has experienced a positive response from upper cervical chiropractic care.

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck, next to the windpipe. It regulates the secretion of important hormones (TSH, T3, and T4) as the main source of energy for our body’s cells. Our entire metabolism relies on the thyroid as a regulator for homeostasis, and abnormalities in the gland’s functioning can contribute to conditions and diseases such as autoimmune thyroid, Hashimoto’s, and Graves’ diseases, as well as thyroiditis, thyroid cancer, and thyroid nodules or goiters.

In the past, we’ve discussed the delicate arrangement of vertebrae, cartilage, and tissues like the brainstem that exist within the connections between skull, neck, and spinal cord in humans. In some cases, head and neck injuries are a contributing factor in thyroid problems caused by subluxations in the upper cervical spine. The fragile arrangement of nerves and tissues, including the brainstem, within the atlas and axis vertebra are most often impacted.

Minor adjustments to correct these subluxations have been known to have amazing results, and those with thyroid disorders are ones that would logically benefit from such non-invasive treatment, as opposed to surgery or long-term medications. In terms of treating debilitating symptoms that include fatigue, hair loss, dry skin, weight gain, depression, anxiety, and increased heart rate, it would seem a beneficial option worth investigating.

This month the Specific Chiropractic Center is conducting an in-depth seminar to discuss thyroid disorders – their symptoms, their complications, and the consequences of the many treatment options. Join us for an opportunity to better understand how the thyroid impacts our overall health, and whether the consideration of upper cervical chiropractic care would benefit your search for a long-term solution for thyroid disorder.

Thyroid Disorders

Before Specific Care

“My hips were very sore making walking and stairs difficult. By the end of the day I would try to not move. I took levothyroxine for hashimoto’s disease (.88mg). I had gained weight with my thyroid problem. My immune system was destroying my thyroid. I had allergies and asthma often with bronchitis and walking pneumonia. I was on Fexofenadine, Albuterol inhaler and Advair. I couldn’t walk outside much without gasping for breath and needing my inhaler. Camping, gardening etc. were not enjoyable. I couldn’t enjoy our 10 grandchildren as much because I was limited in my activities. My legs were covered with varicose veins and my toes were numb on the left foot. I took Advil daily.”

After Specific Care

The first thing I noticed was that the pain in my hips was gone. I could run up stairs and walk for miles. By April, my doctor reduced the strength (of my thyroid medication) from .88mg to .50 mg. By September, my doctor told me to discontinue my levothyroxine. Now, 8 months after starting with Specific Chiropractic Care, I am completely off of all my thyroid medications! My brain has fixed my misinformed immune system and has reversed the hashimoto’s disease. I have lost 25 pounds and continue losing weight without the thyroid medicine. I am also off all my asthma medicines and have not had to take advil for over six months!
