Generation Rx: The Lie of Adolescent Health Care

Generation Rx: The Lie of Adolescent Health Care
There are certain long-established doctrines within Western medicine that have continued to evolve without intervention from the general public, who sometimes question the common diagnoses being eschewed by doctors at large. The extreme sensitivity concerning the prevalence and abuse of drugs like Ritalin, Vicodin, and Prozac among adolescents and the ill effects they contribute to is the focus of a recent documentary called Generation Rx.
The movie, produced by Kevin P. Miller, an investigative journalist who has received numerous accolades for the documentary films he began producing in 1990, examines this controversial subject and focuses on a global conspiracy to treat children pharmaceutically with powerful drugs that have been shown to have devastating effects on the individuals to which they were proscribed.
In Generation Rx, the ethical dilemma of financial gain as a consequence of medical treatment is seen as an epidemic with far-reaching side effects. The collusion between influential entities like the Food and Drug Administration and health officials sympathetic to applied psychiatry, which relies heavily on pharmacology to correct deviant or erratic emotional behavior in young adults, is the crux of this film’s social complaint.
A collective of parents, doctors, and health experts deliver a scathing review of major pharmaceutical companies, media sources, government, and scholastic officials who perpetuate the fallacy of the efficacy of such drugs in treating children labeled as emotionally unstable.
The testimony revealed in interviews with industry experts and parents reveals a system of criminal corruption and negligence in treating kids with psychotropic drugs that have similar effects as those illegal drugs being closely monitored by law enforcement in local communities. The arbitrary, political conditions that guide the course between diagnosis and treatment are seen as threatening to the long-term health and wellness of future generations. The film demonstrates the need for advocacy and public involvement in the initiatives of the healthcare industry as a whole.
The widespread use of dangerous drugs in treating the effects of ADHD and similar behavioral conditions in adolescent children is disconcerting, when combined with news reports of adverse social and criminal behavior in these same individuals months and years later. Our dominant treatment philosophy would appear to have less to do with a child’s welfare than the perpetuation of profitable business relationships among peers in a well-established medical community.
The Specific Chiropractic Center will hold a private screening of this important documentary this month to educate our local family of concerned citizens on the inherent dangers of this seemingly innocuous society of drug-friendly practitioners and organizations. Please call today to reserve your seat for this limited engagement and a subsequent discussion of the important issues it reveals.

Arthritis

Millions of people suffer from debilitating symptoms caused by arthritis. Like many other chronic ailments in human beings, the first line of defense is to seek out pain medications or steroids to relieve symptoms, even though the side effects can be significant.
There are more than one hundred different conditions considered as forms of arthritis that present with different symptoms and root causes, but the most common ailments include rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis.
There is also a specific form of osteoarthritis that directly affects the upper cervical spine, something called cervical spondylosis. Our spinal columns age as rapidly as we do, and in older patients or for those who have had a significant neck injury, this aging process contributes to an increase in degenerative wear on the spine.
The bones and cartilage between the cervical vertebrae are compromised by the degeneration, which puts pressure on spinal nerves and narrows the neural and arterial pathways in the upper cervical spine. Accessory complications can include chronic neck pain and stiffness, headaches, incontinence, fatigue, sleep apnea, and loss of mobility. In extreme cases, correcting the effects of this degeneration and vertebral instability requires surgery.
Doctors continue to research the root causes of arthritis to discover strategies for lessening its effect on patients. Recent studies have focused on a signal molecule called Tenascin-C that seems to trigger the immune system to respond with inflammation in patients who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.
This research is in line with traditional chiropractic theories, which suggest that misalignment of the neck and upper cervical vertebrae can contribute to such immune system deficiencies. The reasons why the body responds to neurological imbalance by inducing inflammation in its own joints and ligaments is one of the most important points that doctors of chiropractic are trying to understand.
Other than the general guidelines for better health that include a healthy diet, rest, and regular exercise, conventional medicine has, to date, been able to offer no known cure for arthritis.
Proper screening from a qualified upper cervical care specialist is one way to determine whether the effects of your arthritis can be minimized with non-invasive procedures. As an alternative to costly therapeutic procedures, a simple upper cervical exam may offer hope in treating the root causes of inflammation that aggravate pain receptors in the hips, lower back, neck, and joints in the hands and feet.
Like many other conditions we’ve discussed on this site, the application of upper cervical specific care is having encouraging results in patients who have seen a significant reduction in episodic pain and discomfort associated with arthritis. By focusing on the critical connections between the axis and atlas vertebra, the occipital bone, and the nervous system, doctors are seeing a dramatic reversal of fortune for patients who have benefited from the procedure.
The Specific Chiropractic Center will be hosting a special workshop this month to discuss arthritis, how it influences our bodies and our health, and what steps to take to find relief and support for symptoms. Please call our offices to register for this in-depth analysis that could be your key to freedom from the pain and discomfort caused by arthritic conditions.

Stretching: Move Well – Be Well!

Stretching is not just something we should be doing before or after exercise, although this is a crucial time to do so. Tendons, muscles, ligaments, and cartilage get stiff from inactivity, and stretching has many benefits that few people appreciate. Routine stretching helps preserve the musculoskeletal connections we depend on for comfort and mobility.
Stretching stimulates the senses, improves circulation and helps the body relax. When we stretch, we help our bodies let go of tension in our muscles, we breathe deeply, we focus for a few brief moments on our state of mind. Vital nutrients and synovial fluid lubricates our joints and tissues, increasing our range of motion.
We may not even be aware of tension being held in our joints until we find relief by employing a sustained stretch routine. The long-term benefits are worth considering. An estimated 20 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, a disease that affects the joints with painful inflammation and decreased mobility.
Physical activity that includes proper stretching builds and maintains strong muscle groups that ensure our joints are well supported when we’re in motion. In fact, many of the various forms of arthritis can benefit from such good habits that we incorporate into our daily lives. Flexibility training is part of a comprehensive strategy proscribed by doctors to improve the symptoms of those suffering from joint disorders.
In addition, therapeutic exercise that includes sensible stretches helps reduce the need for medications in patients recovering from fractures, sprains, and joint-related injuries. This is one of the reasons why yoga is so successful at increasing flexibility, because it encourages gentle, sustained stretches that build muscle strength and physical endurance over time.
Much of our daily activity includes long hours in positions that are not conducive to good alignment or proper posture. As long as we are awake, our body is working to support its own weight. Even at rest, how we sleep and the condition of our bedding determines our level or physical and mental health, particularly when dealing with chronic pain.
Certain areas are particularly susceptible to damage – the lower back, the neck, the knees, and the upper cervical spine. These areas suffer the most from improper positioning, physical stress, and limited range of motion.
The cumulative effect of these stress factors take a toll on our skeletal structure, adding to the natural consequences of our aging process. To preserve for ourselves the greatest amount of independence and physical freedom in our later years, a regular exercise program that includes frequent stretching as part of daily activity is imperative.
To learn more about how stretching can improve your flexibility, stamina, and well-being over time, join us this month at any of our seven locations for a closer look at the potential benefits of stretching. Like many of the enlightening discussions we’ve had in the past, we hope to provide attendees with the tools to improve the quality of life for our community.

Arthritis
Before Specific Care
“I thought growing old meant having arthritis and pain that increased the older you got. My hands were swollen every night (painful), my back hurt, my knees creaked when I walked, I had hot flashes, all my joints (shoulders, feet, arms, etc.) would ache at different times. I had Migraine headaches frequently & intensely. When I was with my grandchildren, I tried to plan activities that would not hurt my body like reading books, doing crafts, puzzles etc. I had migraines that would make me stay in bed all day and frequent hot flashes.”

After Specific Care
“I can play duck, duck, goose & be the goose! Now, I feel unlimited when I am with my grandchildren, up & down, running, dancing, jumping, etc. I can work on the computer all day, knit or crochet or do handwork as long as I want. I have freedom to focus on activities without hurting. No more swollen or painful hands. Arthritic and joint pain is just gone. I also have NO MORE HOT FLASHES or medication for this. I am also not as afraid of having a migraine because they are not so severe. I am HAPPIER & HEALTHIER.”

Controlling Migraines with Upper Cervical Care

If you’ve ever suffered from a migraine headache, you know how helpless and miserable it can make you feel. People who suffer through migraines experience limited mobility, often unable to speak or function normally due to the intensity and duration of the pain. On days like these, some seldom make it out of bed at all.
Along with debilitating pain, migraines can generate blurred vision, dizziness, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. A condition with such seemingly random patterns of frequency, duration, and specific triggers can frustrate the best of those who persevere, despite the symptoms.
According to the National Headache Foundation1, at least 29.5 million people in the U.S. suffer from migraines, and between 70 and 80 percent of those have a family history of the condition. Many turn to traditional medical sources for relief, utilizing strong medications and enduring ineffective and costly treatments in a desperate attempt to eliminate the source of pain.
What’s more, drug therapy, which is usually the preferred choice of treatment for doctors, typically involves side effects, complications with other medications, and in some cases even addiction or dependencies that further incapacitate patients or diminish the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
There are better, more productive treatment options available from licensed, qualified professionals who take the time to assess and treat those who have either exhausted a conventional approach or never considered treatment at all. A lesser-known procedure called Upper Cervical Specific pinpoints and corrects subluxation or misalignment of this critical connection between the neck and spine.
There is an established and documented link between anomalies of the C1 or “atlas” vertebra, the cranio-vertabral area and migraine headaches. The pressure on vertebral arteries and the brain stem can lead to a host of problems and conditions not often recognized by conventional medicine.
Research on the upper cervical spine began in the 1930’s, pioneered by Dr. B.J. Palmer, who devoted much of his life to studying more than 6,000 subjects at his research clinic to better understand how upper cervical injuries affected human health. Today’s select groups of specifically trained individuals who successfully treat patients with safer, more accurate corrections are the beneficial result of that understanding.
An Upper Cervical Specific examination involves more than a simple adjustment or correction. A proper diagnosis involves X-rays and can often involve a situational analysis, including a “headache diary” to determine any conditions, foods, or situations that promote the onset of a migraine episode. Doctors may also consider nutritional and lifestyle changes as necessary to achieve the best long-term results.
In this way, self-care is the final component of an effective strategy to curb and control such headaches. Like other situations that may require medical intervention, all the good intentions of upper cervical care will fail if people do not limit stress, exercise, eat right, and get an adequate amount of sleep.
For a more comprehensive discussion of symptoms, causes, and treatment options, join The Specific Chiropractic Center for this month’s special workshop on migraines to discover a natural alternative to medications and other procedures you may have tried. Our goals, as always, are to eliminate the mystery and confusion behind quality chiropractic care and to promote better overall health.
