Migraines

Before Specific Care

“I had migraines 3-4 times a week. Each migraine required an Imitrex injection. Often I would wake at 3 or 4 a.m. in a cold sweat from the excruciating pain of a migraine. Through the years I would miss at least one day of work per month due to migraines. I had no social life because I was “sick” every weekend or on my days off I had to rest and sleep just so I could be sure to make it to work. I couldn’t plan a weekend or vacation for fear of the dreaded migraine. I also had no energy which meant no social life, no hobbies, and no special activities. Being plagued all my life with disabling migraines severely affected my ability to be a good wife. Also I was plagued all my life with nightmares, every night!“

After Specific Care

“No more nightly nightmares. What a relief!! No more severe migraines. No more nausea and vomiting. I don’t ever have to worry about an ocular migraine attack where I could be endangered while driving or the embarrassment of becoming suddenly ill in front of friends or coworkers. No more medication. Feeling clear headed when I wake up. I repeat, I no longer take any medications. Sometimes I still may have a cluster of weeks where I’ll have one “low grade” migraine but I don’t need medications. Before Specific Chiropractic my migraines were many times worse and I was dependent on injections of Imitrex. I can go weeks now without a hint of a migraine.”

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care and Vertigo

gview

Some of the patients we see in our practice have either previously experienced or are experiencing vertigo, the disorienting sensations of dizziness that vary greatly in acute intensity and duration. Treatments that include a detailed analysis of the upper cervical spine have been shown to more clearly identify the root causes of these frightening symptoms.

Stressed businesswomanPatients who experience vertigo may feel off-balance when standing still, and the sudden attack or episode is often accompanied by nausea, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, and general malaise.

While it is possible that this condition is due to a virus, an adverse reaction to medication, or an inner ear infection or anomaly such as Meniere’s disease, more often the discomfort is a direct reaction to a specific episode of trauma or displacement.

An incident involving head trauma or neck injury can trigger a vertigo response, sometimes long after the initial event takes place. Even a slight displacement caused by chronic strain or a shampoo treatment at a hair salon could be enough to irritate joints and tissues in the upper neck and spine.

The upper cervical specific procedure that properly addresses the condition of the top two vertebrae, the atlas and the axis, as well as the area where the neck and spine meet, requires specific training and experience by a qualified chiropractic care professional. In particular, a care provider should utilize digital infrared imaging and laser radiography to help determine whether these areas are distressed.

The proper treatment of vertigo and similar conditions can produce amazing results. A 2001 case report details the significant improvement of a female Multiple Sclerosis patient whose lesions and associated symptoms disappeared after just four months of treatment. Patient monitoring continued for two years before doctors credited the upper cervical chiropractic care she received as the major component of recovery.

A similar study by Dr. Erin Elster, D.C. involving sixty patients yielded similar results. Ninety-three percent of these patients reported a history of trauma, and cervical subluxations in the upper spine were present in all sixty. All of these patients experienced significant improvement or complete reversal of symptoms after treatment.

Many other patients with similar circumstances have received positive results that have greatly improved their health and well-being, both mentally and physically.

The neural gateway that flows through the brain stem affects our most vital systematic functioning, things like equilibrium, coordination, balance, and controlled movement. When trauma or displacement of the upper cervical spine occurs, vertigo is just one of the many conditions that can develop as a result.

Too often, doctors address these conditions with medication that brings as many unwanted and debilitating side effects as the symptoms themselves.

The Specific Chiropractic Center will be conducting a seminar this month to address these concerns for sufferers of vertigo, educating the public on the range of options available to those who understand these conditions more thoroughly. We welcome you to join us for an intimate and revealing discussion that could completely change your life.

It’s Never Too Late to Reset Fitness Goals

gview

Most people who set fitness goals do so at the beginning of the year, when New Years’ resolutions are still fresh in their minds, when their willpower and conviction are the strongest. By summer, these same people often lose their momentum, when circumstances change or when the immediate results they expected don’t happen as quickly as they’d like.

smart goal setting conceptThese are crucial moments when the decisions we make can decide the fate of our fitness regimen for the rest of the year, even the rest of our lives. If your goals were too vague or unrealistic to start with, now is the time to sharpen your focus while achieving a level of success your mind and body can live with.

Perhaps you expected too much from yourself, especially if it had been a long time since you engaged in any regular exercise. Maybe you “bit off more than you could chew,” or you simply need a coach or a guide to help smooth out the rough spots in your regimen for health and wellness.

Most exercise plans and “healthy” diets fail because the path people choose for themselves is so drastically different than what they’re used to, they can’t manage the difficult changes they’ve structured for themselves. When the pressure and physical effort becomes too hard to bear, many give up completely, instead of letting up on the gas pedal or finding a happy medium.

You don’t have to exhaust yourself at the gym or starve yourself in the name of fitness. As a society, we are programmed to expect everything to magically fall in our laps, with relative ease and certainty. Better health takes hard work and discipline, and some are better than others are at maintaining their composure and keeping themselves moving in the right direction.

There is also the element of injury to our “core” supportive tissues in the back, the spine, and the tendons and joints that allow us to move freely. If we push our bodies beyond their limits, the potential for a damaging injury that limits our mobility makes staying on track that much harder.

There are practical tips for losing weight, staying in shape, and eating healthier, three things that can have a dramatic effect on the condition and stability of our nervous system and our cardiovascular system.

These are the key elements that pump blood and vital nutrients throughout our tissues, lubricate joints, and infuse the body with vigor and vitality. If we tax our bodies less with excess weight, empty calories, and erratic exercise routines, they will respond in positive ways, creating energy that keeps the wheels of our “train of fitness” in motion.

Sometimes all you need is a helping hand to bring your personal goals back into focus. The Specific Chiropractic Center has put together a special interactive class this month for a select group of willing individuals who want to discuss their obstacles and success stories with others. The practical tips we learn as a group will help us choose SMART goals for better health.
