Sleep Apnea

Before Specific Care

“I suffered from Sleep Apnea for 8-10 years. I heard about Sleep Apnea from my family who would tell me that when I slept, I would stop breathing and then gasp for air as if I had been suffocating. This gasping was an ongoing occurrence every 3-4 minutes when I was asleep. This caused me to be very tired during my ‘awake’ hours. I found myself falling sleep while in church, at the movies, at friends houses or anytime I was sitting still for a few minutes. In talking to my medical doctor, I was advised to lose weight if I wanted to overcome Sleep Apnea. I was also provided with a CPAP machine to wear at night time, which blew air into my nostrils to keep me breathing through the night.”

After Specific Care

“I began receiving treatment at The Specific Chiropractic Center after being diagnosed as having a neck that was out of alignment. After two months of twice-a-week adjustments and check- up’s I was asked to sleep without using my CPAP machine to see if I was still suffering from Sleep Apnea. My wife was happy to say that I no longer gasped for air while I was asleep. It has been over two years now and I haven’t had to use my CPAP machine at all and I am still sleeping comfortably without it. It is great because not only do I sleep more restfully at night but I also am thankful that I no  longer have to haul my CPAP machine around when I travel for business or pleasure. “

High Blood Pressure: Soothing the Body Naturally

SphegmomanometerTwo recent studies point to significant success at reducing blood pressure levels without medication. Evidence suggests that self-therapy and upper cervical specific chiropractic care can increase health benefits to hypertensive patients.

Last year’s Scientific Meeting and Expo, sponsored by the American Society of Hypertension, revealed a report from the University of Florence in Italy that disclosed how daily intervals of soothing music were conducive to reduced systolic blood pressure. 28 of 48 volunteers who were receiving medication for hypertension listened to soothing music for 30 minutes while performing breathing exercises once a day for 30 days. Results from the study linked a significant reduction in blood pressure to this daily routine, as compared to the 20-member control group.

The results have been supported by many cardiologists and healthcare professionals since then, who clearly understand the benefits such therapeutic input can have for the sympathetic nervous system, which helps control blood pressure.

A study with similar goals was reported by George Bakris, MD, head of the hypertension center at the University of Chicago, in a 2008 issue of the Journal of Human Hypertension. Half of the 50 patients who participated were given simple chiropractic adjustments to the C-1 vertebra, a key cervical component of the upper spine. Eight weeks after the adjustment, the 25 people showed an average decrease in blood pressure of 17 points, worthy of the power of two medications with conventional treatment.

Bakris and others believe if this so-called Atlas vertebra is injured or misaligned, it creates neurological signals that restrict arterial blood flow, particularly where the skull meets the spine. He is opening his study to further research to determine the significance of his findings.

The implications of these studies point to the importance of regular chiropractic screening for optimum health. The fragility of the Atlas and Axis vertebrae make it necessary to closely monitor changes in how we feel and function. A number of seemingly common ailments can be traced to improper alignment and the associative dysfunction of our nervous system. The doctors at The Specific Chiropractic Center are trained to help you to determine whether or not you have nervous system dysfunction and can be benefitted by upper cervical specific chiropractic.
