Dizziness and Vertigo

Using Chiropractic Care to Treat Dizziness and Vertigo
If we feel physically off balance or the world seems to move around us, we have a problem with dizziness. Dizziness causes some people to experience slight environmental movements while more extreme symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, hearing loss, visual problems, difficulty walking and ear pressure. Regardless of the severity of symptoms, the bottom line is that people can’t function well when they don’t feel upright and balanced.
There are essentially four types of “dizziness”: Feeling lightheaded, feeling faint, feeling off balance with a sense of disequilibrium and experiencing vertigo, a sensation that feels as though the world is spinning around us. While the inner ear frequently plays a role in such problems, cervical factors may be present in all types of dizziness. Disequilibrium and vertigo are most commonly controlled by chiropractic rehabilitation, but upper chiropractic care may be essential in helping to manage all four types of dizziness.
The spine plays an essential role in helping the body maintain a sense of equilibrium and balance. Several studies have determined that cervicogenic vertigo occurs when joints in the upper neck are irritated (another type of vertigo, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, is caused by problems in the inner ear). These joints are essential in coordinating eye, head and body movements as well as controlling posture and helping determine spatial orientation, so it’s little surprise that stress on these joints can result in vertigo. Though trauma-induced vertigo may take months or years to develop, upper cervical chiropractic care can help minimize the symptoms associated with this type of injury by reducing the irritation to the nerves that cause vertigo.
Upper cervical chiropractors use a handful of tests to determine if the dizziness or vertigo experienced by a patient is due to a cervical spine problem and/or an inner ear issue, the most common of which is the rotating stool test. If vertigo or disequilibrium is caused by an issue in the cervical spine, an upper cervical chiropractor can frequently treat the problem. The cervical spine must be fully functioning in order for patients to completely recover from cervicogenic vertigo. Treatment for this type of vertigo is directed toward the area of joint dysfunction as well as areas of muscular dysfunction.
For those suffering from disequilibrium, chiropractic care is often combined with propriosensory retraining—a system designed to retrain the locomotor system and sense of balance. A holistic healing approach that encompasses upper cervical chiropractic care is essential for a full recovery for both disequilibrium and cervicogenic vertigo.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care and Vertigo

Some of the patients we see in our practice have either previously experienced or are experiencing vertigo, the disorienting sensations of dizziness that vary greatly in acute intensity and duration. Treatments that include a detailed analysis of the upper cervical spine have been shown to more clearly identify the root causes of these frightening symptoms.
Patients who experience vertigo may feel off-balance when standing still, and the sudden attack or episode is often accompanied by nausea, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, and general malaise.
While it is possible that this condition is due to a virus, an adverse reaction to medication, or an inner ear infection or anomaly such as Meniere’s disease, more often the discomfort is a direct reaction to a specific episode of trauma or displacement.
An incident involving head trauma or neck injury can trigger a vertigo response, sometimes long after the initial event takes place. Even a slight displacement caused by chronic strain or a shampoo treatment at a hair salon could be enough to irritate joints and tissues in the upper neck and spine.
The upper cervical specific procedure that properly addresses the condition of the top two vertebrae, the atlas and the axis, as well as the area where the neck and spine meet, requires specific training and experience by a qualified chiropractic care professional. In particular, a care provider should utilize digital infrared imaging and laser radiography to help determine whether these areas are distressed.
The proper treatment of vertigo and similar conditions can produce amazing results. A 2001 case report details the significant improvement of a female Multiple Sclerosis patient whose lesions and associated symptoms disappeared after just four months of treatment. Patient monitoring continued for two years before doctors credited the upper cervical chiropractic care she received as the major component of recovery.
A similar study by Dr. Erin Elster, D.C. involving sixty patients yielded similar results. Ninety-three percent of these patients reported a history of trauma, and cervical subluxations in the upper spine were present in all sixty. All of these patients experienced significant improvement or complete reversal of symptoms after treatment.
Many other patients with similar circumstances have received positive results that have greatly improved their health and well-being, both mentally and physically.
The neural gateway that flows through the brain stem affects our most vital systematic functioning, things like equilibrium, coordination, balance, and controlled movement. When trauma or displacement of the upper cervical spine occurs, vertigo is just one of the many conditions that can develop as a result.
Too often, doctors address these conditions with medication that brings as many unwanted and debilitating side effects as the symptoms themselves.
The Specific Chiropractic Center will be conducting a seminar this month to address these concerns for sufferers of vertigo, educating the public on the range of options available to those who understand these conditions more thoroughly. We welcome you to join us for an intimate and revealing discussion that could completely change your life.

Vertigo
Before Specific Care
“I had severe vertigo and had been taking medications for over 9 months. I also suffered with a hypothyroid condition and migraines. I was experiencing headaches and migraines every month. My thyroid medicines always had to be increased. My headaches would take me out of my life completely. I would usually lose one or two days because of them. My thyroid gave me mood swings and sleeping issues. The vertigo just made me dizzy every time I moved. When you are in pain all of the time and tired all of the time your mood, like mine, affects everyone else around you.”

After Specific Care
“After 9 months of vertigo it has disappeared totally. I no longer need motion sickness medication. My thyroid medicine has been reduced by two doses! This is the first time in over 10 years that this has happened. I am also getting far fewer headaches now. I am just a happier person all around and I have much more energy. I was very skeptical when I first started under care with Specific Chiropractic, but I wanted to try a different approach to my ailments. When my vertigo disappeared 6 weeks into the treatments I was won over. Then when I no longer had back and hip pain I was fully convinced of the benefits of Specific Chiropractic.”
