Kids and Chiropractic Care

When people talk about chiropractic care, they are normally referring to care provided to an adult. These adults may suffer from headaches, insomnia or any number of chronic conditions that can’t be “cured” by standard medical practice.

What many fail to appreciate is that children also suffer from a myriad of conditions that can keep them from living a full, healthy and productive lifestyle. Because the idea of providing chiropractic care to children is so foreign for many people, it may sound strange or dangerous, but consider these facts:

  • The spinal cord and brain stem are often injured during the birth process but are not diagnosed. This leads to a condition called blocked atlantal nerve syndrome, which causes upper respiratory infections such as ear infections and chronic tonsillitis. There was a study done where children with this condition who suffered from ear infections were corrected with chiropractic care, and 40 out of 43 of these kids improved with only chiropractic care within two weeks of the adjustment.
  • Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between restrictions in movement of the upper neck area of the spine and children with learning disabilities.

In addition to birth trauma, children may suffer from spinal problems through frequent falls at an early age as they learn to walk and play. Falling from bed or other sudden movements that result in the unsupported movement of the head and neck may also contribute to spinal problems.

So how can you tell if your child has a spinal problem? Common signs include the head consistently being tilted to one side, restricted head or neck motion, difficulties sleeping, feeding and nursing problems and persistent earaches, sore throats, colic, headaches, bed wetting and growing pains.

When children suffer from common childhood maladies as those noted above, parents often contact their pediatrician for assistance. It shouldn’t be any surprise that standard medical care is the preferred route for parents hoping to help their children feel better. However, chiropractic care for young patients is becoming more popular, despite the fact that many medical doctors don’t realize how much help it can provide young children. In 2007, nearly three percent of children in the United States were treated with chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation. This made it the second most common type of alternative medicine (after the use of natural products) for children.

As I’ve noted before, chiropractic care isn’t just about helping the back feel better. As a chiropractor, my goal is to help take stress and tension off of the nervous system so that full-body wellbeing—both physically and mentally—is possible. When bones misalign, they press on nerves, and the whole body suffers the repercussions. For children who have suffered a birth trauma or have a chronic health problem, there is a very real possibility that chiropractic care can help alleviate the physical stresses on their bodies so that they are able to lead healthier lives.
