It’s just one of those days. You know the ones I’m talking about, right? You woke up late and had to rush to be at work on time. Then, you’re finally on your way, and you realize just how many red lights are on your route because you hit every single one of them. You spill your coffee in the car because the lid wasn’t on straight. You’re starving, but you left your lunch at home. You have to pick up your coworkers’ slack again. Your computer will not stop freezing. And the list goes on and on.
These types of days are awful. But, do they have to remain awful? Absolutely not. By practicing these 5 things, you can completely flip your day around in under 5 minutes!
- Stop What You’re Doing
Whatever you are working on or reading or stressing about, STOP IT as soon as you can. Put it down and leave it alone for a couple of minutes, or at the most, five minutes. Take your mind off of your task and bring yourself back to the present moment. By consciously taking yourself out of the low frequency that your day is currently set on, you will be able to change that frequency to a higher one.
- Take A Deep Breath
Focusing on your breathing has more benefits than can be counted, but the one we are interested in right now is its ability to completely restart your day. So now that you have pressed the pause button, close your eyes. Sit up straight, place both feet on the floor. Place your hands in your lap, or like me, you can place them on your stomach. Slowly, count to five as you take in a huge breath. Feel your belly push into your hands. Hold this rejuvenating breath in for five seconds. Then, slowly, take five more seconds to exhale all of your breath. Repeat this process at least three times.
- What Are You Grateful For?
Quickly, think of at least three things you are grateful for and appreciate. Intentionally focusing your attention on the positive things that surround you in your life has ridiculously awesome consequences. Not only does it flip your perspective for the day, but it allows room for other good things to happen, simply because you will have an easier time spotting them when they come along. Bonus points if you write them down!
- Anchor Yourself
Have you ever heard that you remember something better by putting what you’re trying to remember in a story? Or what about the song you listened to during that one unforgettable summer? Your brain, specifically your limbic system, is designed to remember both the experience and the emotions you felt during that experience. So when you hear the song again, that goofy smile spreads across your face as those good memories flash through your head.
Anchoring is about taking this aspect of science and making it work in your favor when your day is not going as you’d like. You can Anchor to a special song or a scent. If you choose to Anchor to a scent, I recommend using a dōTERRA Essential Oil (which you can get from any Specific doctor!) My favorite dōTERRA Anchor is “Balance.” You start this process by first choosing to smell an oil when you’re feeling content and blissful. Smell the oil at this exact time, and eventually your brain will associate this smell with that “on-top-of-the-world” feeling. And then, when you’re having a bad day, smell your Anchor and wait for that smile to spread across your face.
- Repeat Your Personal Script
Your Personal Script is like a mantra or a positive affirmation – the only difference is you will write it for yourself. It affects your brain in a way similar to Anchoring, and has the positive after-effects of writing down what you appreciate. Writing your own Personal Script and repeating it not only when you need to flip your day around, but every morning, is something that will dramatically change your life for the better. It instills confidence, attracts positive energy, and allows you to live at a higher frequency.
