Anxiety

Before Specific Care

“I had many different ailments, but the most prevalent issue was my anxiety. I couldn’t function normally. I was reclusive and very unsocial because I was in fear of the anxiety that took over my body when I engaged in any conversation. My heart would pound, my face would turn red, my voice and vision would shake, and my mind would go blank. It’s a very sad and lonely world when you have anxiety. After a bad experience with prescription drugs, I vowed to go the alternative, natural way. I tried Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine and I tried different types of therapies. These helped, but my anxiety was still there. I couldn’t live this way. I kept searching for answers…”

After Specific Care

“My life has completely changed. Almost instantly my anxiety went away along with my depression. I have mental clarity. I know it sounds weird, but my brain feels better. I love and cherish my life now which is amazing to me. Upper cervical chiropractic doctors are wonderful people and I’m so glad that I was led here. It’s so very complex yet so simple: They gave me my life back.”

H1N1 Prevention Tips

h1n1Everywhere we turn these days, we’re met with more news about the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu. The news media are quick to report the latest about the illness, and in October, President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency, saying that “the rates of illness continue to rise rapidly within many communities across the nation.” The U.S. Government is even offering the H1N1 vaccine for free.

Does that mean you need to run out and get the next available H1N1 shot? Not necessarily. H1N1 is a virus spreading from person to person much the way the regular seasonal flu is spread, and while a number of people in the United States have become ill with the virus, most have recovered without needing medical treatment.

But just like the seasonal flu, there are many things you can do besides getting an H1N1 vaccination that will help prevent you from getting sick with the virus. Be proactive and protect yourself this holiday season by doing the following:

Learn more about the H1N1 virus and how you can protect yourself from it this holiday season when you attend one of Specific Chiropractic Center’s last workshops of the year. Join us this month as we offer recommendations on how you can boost your immunity and ring in the New Year happy, healthy and H1N1 free.

Holiday Stress or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Holiday Stress or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

chronic-fatigueWhile enjoyable and festive, the holiday season has the ability to throw our lives into disarray. Irregular work and sleep schedules, overtime with extended family, financial stress and extensive travel can all take their toll on our general health.

But what does it mean when the last ornament has been packed away and the final Christmas cookie has been eaten … and you still feel that holiday stress sitting on your shoulders? It’s possible you’re suffering from more than sleepless nights thinking about your credit card bills.

According to a number of studies done by the Centers for Disease Control, between one and four million Americans suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome. Though many people go untreated, the sooner someone is consulted about the problem, the more likely the illness can be fully treated and resolved.

In addition to general fatigue, people with chronic fatigue syndrome may experience a loss of memory or concentration, sore throat, painful or mildly enlarged lymph nodes, unexplained muscle pain, unrefreshing sleep, headaches, pain that moves from one joint to another without swelling or redness, and extreme exhaustion lasting more than 24 hours after physical or mental exercise. For some people, symptoms peak and then stabilize early in the illness, then come and go in waves. Some find that they recover completely from the condition while others have symptoms that grow progressively worse.

Though there is no known cause for chronic fatigue syndrome, there have been some suggestions as to what might trigger it. These include depression, low blood sugar, a history of allergies, iron deficiency anemia, virus infections, hypotension, changes in the hormones and inflammation in nervous-system pathways. It occurs in women four times more often than it does in men, and while people of all ages can get chronic fatigue syndrome, those in their 40s and 50s are most likely to develop the condition.

Because of the mysterious nature of chronic fatigue syndrome, it may go undiagnosed and untreated for a long time. As a result, sufferers may fall into depression or suffer from side effects related to incorrect medication treatments or from lack of activity. Fatigue may cause social isolation and have an adverse effect on the normal lifestyle. People who have chronic fatigue syndrome may also end up missing work, which can have a ripple effect throughout many aspects of their lives.

The good news is that, once the holiday season is over, all the related stress will (hopefully) melt away for another 300+ days. Unfortunately for those suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome, there is no known medical “cure” that can wipe away the illness. However, Specific Chiropractic is delivering hope this holiday season to those who suffer from this condition. If you or someone you love suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, sign up today for a workshop that will help return you to a normal and vibrant life … just in time for the holidays!

Dizziness and Vertigo

Using Chiropractic Care to Treat Dizziness and Vertigo

If we feel physically off balance or the world seems to move around us, we have a problem with dizziness. Dizziness causes some people to experience slight environmental movements while more extreme symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, hearing loss, visual problems, difficulty walking and ear pressure. Regardless of the severity of symptoms, the bottom line is that people can’t function well when they don’t feel upright and balanced.

There are essentially four types of “dizziness”: Feeling lightheaded, feeling faint, feeling off balance with a sense of disequilibrium and experiencing vertigo, a sensation that feels as though the world is spinning around us. While the inner ear frequently plays a role in such problems, cervical factors may be present in all types of dizziness. Disequilibrium and vertigo are most commonly controlled by chiropractic rehabilitation, but upper chiropractic care may be essential in helping to manage all four types of dizziness.

The spine plays an essential role in helping the body maintain a sense of equilibrium and balance. Several studies have determined that cervicogenic vertigo occurs when joints in the upper neck are irritated (another type of vertigo, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, is caused by problems in the inner ear). These joints are essential in coordinating eye, head and body movements as well as controlling posture and helping determine spatial orientation, so it’s little surprise that stress on these joints can result in vertigo. Though trauma-induced vertigo may take months or years to develop, upper cervical chiropractic care can help minimize the symptoms associated with this type of injury by reducing the irritation to the nerves that cause vertigo.

Upper cervical chiropractors use a handful of tests to determine if the dizziness or vertigo experienced by a patient is due to a cervical spine problem and/or an inner ear issue, the most common of which is the rotating stool test. If vertigo or disequilibrium is caused by an issue in the cervical spine, an upper cervical chiropractor can frequently treat the problem. The cervical spine must be fully functioning in order for patients to completely recover from cervicogenic vertigo. Treatment for this type of vertigo is directed toward the area of joint dysfunction as well as areas of muscular dysfunction.

For those suffering from disequilibrium, chiropractic care is often combined with propriosensory retraining—a system designed to retrain the locomotor system and sense of balance. A holistic healing approach that encompasses upper cervical chiropractic care is essential for a full recovery for both disequilibrium and cervicogenic vertigo.
